Waterford, Michigan is located in Northern Oakland County. Waterford, Michigan had a population in 2010 of 71,707.  Waterford currently maintains its own Fire and Police department. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.3 square miles of which 31.3 square miles is land and 4.0 square miles or 11.22%, is water.

HISTORY

“Before European settlers came here in the 18th and early 19th century, the area was inhabited by the Iroquoian and Algonquian tribes of the Ottawas, Ojibwas, Hurons, Potawatomies, Sauk, Miamis, Sashabaws, and others. Lewis Cass, the third governor of the Michigan Territory, defined the boundaries of Oakland County in 1819. Waterford, Michigan is home to the 51st District Court.  This court is located at 5100 Civic Center Drive Waterford, MI 48329. The court has three divisions including civil including landlord tenant, criminal including drunk driving, dui, owi, owil, and all traffic matters. 51 District Court does not hear cases with the amount in controversy over $25,000.  These cases over $25,000 dollars are heard in the Oakland Circuit Court Located in Oakland County Michigan at 1200 N. Telegraph Rd. Pontiac, MI. This Court is also home to a family division which hears case involving divorce, child custody, paternity, child support, personal protection orders etc.  In addition, Waterford is also subject to the Probate Court at Oakland Circuit Court.  The probate Court handles matters such as decedent’s estates, wills, trusts, guardianships, patient advocate issues, power of attorney issues etc.
